About John Kerrison

John Kerrison in Amsterdam

The television reporter turned travel writer and photographer.

I was a network television reporter in Australia for ten years, starting as a news reader in regional Australia before roles on camera for ABC News Adelaide, Nine News and Sky News in Sydney.

Being a proud story-teller only matters when you share stories, so I invite you to enjoy this collection of exclusive articles.

Travelling is a wonderful reason to write. The thrill of a holiday is a privilege not everyone gets to enjoy. I remember seeing my parents’ excitement when, as older adults, they ventured overseas for the first time. They took my sister and me to Canada and the USA in 1983. We were rewarded with Disneyland because we behaved.

I never did the traditional gap year nor did I run away to be a backpacker. I threw myself into a successful career as a news reporter and then as a communication executive, which continues as my primary source of income.

Like most people playing a part in our rough and tumble free market economy, I’ve developed a healthy dose of anxiety which is best managed by a damn good holiday.

I can remember one of these breaks in my thirties.

I was standing with my then partner on the balcony of a white-washed hotel on the Island of Mykonos. The sun was setting over the Aegean Sea and painting the rocky cliffs in shades of orchid violet. I can still feel the warm night air on my skin when I recall that view.

Holidays are about moments. We only have so many of them.

In 2024 I completed formal photography studies so that all those years of taking pictures now suddenly make sense. I have a keen eye and intend to use this channel to share photo essays that I hope bring the exotic within reach.

We grow on the edge of our world view. My partner Jeff and I are growing as we travel, leaving our home in Sydney to discover, not just distant shores, but more about who we are.

I hope this writing makes you feel like you are right there, with me.
